Douglas and Eira were a devoted married couple with a publishing business in central London. They were conventional in every way but one - they were determined that whoever died first would try to contact the other. Douglas was about 20 years older than Eira and died first, on the 6th June 1958. Eira, with no previous experience of contacting the departed, set about finding a practical way to talk to Douglas. He had been a devout Anglican - amongst the many questions that Eira had, the question of 'Religion' and how it was perceived 'on the other side' dominated - how had Douglas found his beliefs when tested against the real 'life' after death?

She was already prepared, through her mutual agreement with Douglas, to make serious efforts to continue their relationship until they could be reunited. She says of grief: "I was saved the overwhelming sorrow which often follows the passing of a greatly-loved companion, and thereby forms the greatest barrier to communication"

Thus, stronger than most of us could be, she set out to find a way of contacting Douglas, never dreaming at that stage of the amazing extent of that contact and its wonderful content. She tape-recorded his words and this book is the result.

Eira's story brings a new dimension of meaning, purpose and enjoyment to those that are bereaved. Suddenly all is not lost, everything ceases to be black, the light at the end of the tunnel is switched back on. One becomes alive again to life, looking forward to the years here and still more to re-membering literally with loved ones in the next life.

Douglas describes the situation there so well that grief is forgotten in an instant - how can we be so sad when we know that the spirit of our temporarily lost one is alive and enjoying the very best of 'life'?
